SIIA Welcomes Values-Based AI Principles for Regulation

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 7, 2020) – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association for the software, information, and digital content industries, welcomes today’s release of draft principles for government regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI).  SIIA will comment on the specific principles following further review.

SIIA President and CEO, Jeff Joseph, issued the following statement:

"SIIA thanks the Trump Administration for articulating a risk-based regulatory approach that protects people without being unduly precautionary and recognizes that AI can improve current practices.  For example, it is right to consider how AI applications could exacerbate, as well as mitigate, discrimination. The Administration is also correct in highlighting how the private sector can contribute to regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to AI.  For example, the private sector partners with the government at times to develop datasets that require appropriate protection.  SIIA looks forward to continuing to work with the Administration to shape dynamic regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to advance AI’s potential for good.”
