WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 26, 2019) – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal association for the software and digital content industries, today said that the February 26, 2019 House of Representatives hearing and the February 27, 2019 Senate hearing on privacy are important steps in creating the information base needed to develop a federal privacy law.

SIIA Senior VP for Public Policy, Mark MacCarthy, issued the following statement:

“SIIA supports a federal privacy law, and we explained our views on what it should contain in this submission to the Federal Trade Commission.  SIIA will further develop these views in submissions to both houses of Congress.   A federal law should apply to areas not covered by existing sector-specific laws, such as the education sector, and it should preempt state law.  A federal law should respect the first amendment and advance good public policy by exempting information that can be found in public records so that anti-money laundering, anti-terrorism, know-your-customer, and other societally crucial functions can continue."
