SIIA Applauds Passage of California AB 874
WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 12, 2019) – The Software & Information Industry Association, the principal association for the software, information, and digital content industries, applauds the September 11, 2019 California Senate unanimous passage of AB 874, a bill that amends the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) so that public records can continue to be used consistent with the First Amendment. DAB 874 also will allow for the use of public records to address important public policy goals, for instance combatting money laundering and ensuring that know your customer requirements are met.
SIIA President and CEO, Jeff Joseph, praised the passage of the bill, stating:
“SIIA supports the goals of the CCPA to address legitimate and critical consumer privacy concerns. Interests in privacy must be balanced, however, against societal commitments to freedom of speech and government transparency. This bill shows California’s longstanding commitment to the openness of public records and the First Amendment,” Joseph said. “We thank the Representative Irwin, Senator Jackson, and Senator Hertzberg for their efforts in getting this bill passed.”
