SIIA Joins Multi-Association Letter to Urge Ratification of the USMCA

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 29, 2019) – The Software & Information Industry Association, the principal association for the software, information, and digital content industries, signed a multi-association letter to urge Congress to ratify the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA).  The associations who signed the letter represent leading U.S. firms in data analytics, software, semiconductors, cloud computing, telecom services, hardware, content, app development, and many other sectors vital to America’s economy, technology leadership, and national security.

SIIA Senior VP for Global Public Policy, Carl Schonander, issued the following statement:

“The USMCA is a major step forward in creating an open trading system in data.  As we have mentioned before, we are pleased with the agreement’s cross-border data flow obligations, protections for source code/algorithms, and recognition that the APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules system is a valid facilitator of cross-border data flows, including financial data, while protecting personal information.  We also agree with the findings of the recent USITC report on the positive impact that these digital trade rules will have on the U.S. economy.

“SIIA joins our colleagues in urging Congress to ratify the USMCA as it will serve as a boon for innovation in the future.”
